Before you declare the boiler dead, work through five checks in sequence. Most "dead boiler" calls turn out to be one of these.
Short answer first: check the pressure gauge, then the thermostat and timer settings, then the fused spur or trip switch by the boiler, then the immersion heater as a backup, and — if you're on oil — the tank. It's not a permanent answer — immersion heaters cost more to run than a boiler over time — but it's a genuinely useful stopgap while you wait for a plumber.
If the boiler has a digital display, look for an error code before resetting anything. Examiner's note: "which taps, exactly" is worth asking yourself before you ask a plumber. It's the difference between a five-minute fix and a wasted call-out.
Not usually — hot water with no heating, or heating with no hot water, points at the diverter valve or a specific zone valve rather than the boiler itself failing outright. It's a more targeted fault than a boiler that's produced nothing at all, and it's genuinely useful information to give whoever you call, since it narrows the job before they've even arrived.
Lukewarm rather than cold often points at the thermostat set too low, a part-failed heating element in an immersion heater, or a boiler that's firing but not reaching full temperature — sometimes limescale coating the heat exchanger in hard-water areas. It's rarely urgent in the way a full cold-water fault is, but it's worth reporting rather than just turning the dial up and hoping.
